AOL And VoIP

Time Warner Inc. said on Tuesday its America Online Inc. unit would introduce a new VoIP service called TotalTalk early next month.

VoIP allows customers to use their high-speed Internet connection instead of traditional landlines to make telephone calls. AOL said its TotalTalk service may lead to savings of up to 40 percent on monthly bills.

It said it would begin the roll out of the new service on October 4.

I guess this is different from their digital phone service. Is it part of a bigger plan seeing as though Microsoft aquired Teleo and now is talking with Time Warner about buying into AOL?

AOL’s TotalTalk will be like the service offered by Vonage, allowing you to make calls from your PCs to phones by installing a broadband router. As with Vonage, the PC doesn’t need to come into play, as you are able to dial through a phone.

And like Vonage, TotalTalk isn’t free. You will pay anywhere from $18.99 to $34.99 per month based on the calling plan you choose.
